Jazz Dance Classes in Tulsa, OK

Jazz is the most versatile style we teach. It blends ballet technique with personality, energy, and the kind of clean lines that make a dancer pop on stage. At Elite Dance of Tulsa, jazz classes train the technical chops and the performance instincts that competition judges, audiences, and choreographers all look for.

What Makes Jazz Dance Different

Jazz pulls from a wide history — Broadway, Bob Fosse, MTV-era commercial dance, modern pop choreography — and modern jazz technique is the connective tissue running through almost every category in competitive dance. A strong jazz dancer can handle musical theater, lyrical, contemporary, and convention pieces with confidence. That is why jazz is required training for every dancer on our Elite Company.

Jazz also happens to be one of the most enjoyable styles for kids and teens. The music is upbeat, the choreography is dynamic, and the payoff between effort and visible improvement is fast.

What Students Learn in Jazz

Age Groups and Class Levels

Mini Jazz (Ages 4–6)

Our youngest jazz dancers learn through fun, age-appropriate choreography. The focus is on coordination, rhythm, and confidence in front of a class.

Foundational Jazz (Ages 7–10)

Dancers start to learn the formal vocabulary of jazz. Across-the-floor exercises, jumps, and turn progressions are introduced. Students at this level perform in our recital and become eligible for competition team auditions.

Intermediate and Advanced Jazz (Ages 11+)

Older and more experienced dancers tackle technique combinations at a faster tempo, with cleaner expectations for lines, timing, and performance. Advanced classes prepare dancers for competition and convention work.

Why Ballet and Jazz Go Together

Strong jazz dancers almost always have strong ballet. The turnout, alignment, and clean transitions that ballet teaches show up directly in jazz turns, leaps, and combinations. We strongly recommend pairing jazz with our ballet program for any dancer who wants to grow seriously.

Recreational and Competitive Jazz

Jazz is one of the most popular categories at every regional and national dance competition. Our Elite Company performs multiple jazz routines each season, and our recreational dancers enjoy the same energy and choreography style in our annual recital.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does my dancer wear to a jazz class in Tulsa?

Jazz shoes (slip-on or split-sole), a leotard or fitted top, and form-fitting bottoms like leggings or jazz pants. Hair should be pulled back. Specific dress codes are shared at enrollment.

Does my dancer need ballet to take jazz?

Not to start. Beginners can absolutely take jazz on its own. But as dancers move into intermediate and advanced levels, ballet becomes essential to keep growing.

How long until my dancer can compete in jazz?

Most dancers who join our Elite Company perform competition jazz routines from their first season. Auditions are held in May.
